Course Overview

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is considered the minimum qualification requirement for those seeking to work as a WHS coordinator, advisor or safety officer. This course is designed to give participants practical knowledge and skills to enable the provision of valid and timely WHS advice and assist with improving safety in the workplace.

During this program you will learn how to comply with work health and safety legislation, identify hazards, and assess and control WHS risks. In addition, you will learn how to evaluate an organisation’s WHS performance and contribute to health and safety in the workplace.


5-day intensive workshop with pre-course readings and online assessment and 1 post-course project

This qualification is suitable for people working in a work health and safety (WHS) role, who may or may not work under supervision. They provide leadership and guidance to others and have some limited responsibility for the output of others. The qualification reflects the role of workers who apply a broad knowledge base and well-developed skills in a wide variety of contexts and include coordinators, advisors and facilitators.

Participants are required to have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to read and comprehend instruction for:

  • Referencing and understanding legislation, standards and codes of practice
  • Consulting with workers and employers on safety issues
  • Preparing workplace health and safety reports

Examples of indicative job roles for candidates seeking entry based upon their vocational experience include:

  • Health and Safety Representative
  • Health and Safety Committee Member
  • Health and Safety Assistant

This breadth of expertise would equate to the competencies required to undertake this qualification.

After achieving this qualification, candidates may undertake BSB51315 Diploma of Work Health and Safety.

This qualification covers the following units of competency:

BSBWHS402 Assist with compliance with WHS laws*
BSBWHS403 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes*
BSBWHS404 Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control*
BSBWHS405 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems*
BSBWHS406 Assist with responding to incidents*
BSBWHS407 Assist with claims management, rehabilitation and return to work programs
BSBWHS408 Assist with effective WHS management of contractors
BSBWHS409 Assist with workplace monitoring processes
BSBWHS510 Contribute to implementing emergency procedures
PUAWER002B Ensure workplace emergency prevention procedures, systems and processes are implemented

*Core unit

Participants who demonstrate competency by passing both the theory and practical assessments (for all units as stated above) will receive a Qualification in BSB41415 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety issued by Improve Group RTO #31506.

Participants who complete individual units will receive a Statement of Attainment for those units completed.

By enrolling into an Improve Group Certificate IV WHS course, you may attend Certificate IV WHS support days. These support days are available upon request face-to-face at the Improve Group head office, or online and allow you to:

  • Work with trainers in a face-to-face environment
  • Ask questions about assessment pieces
