Course Overview

This unit provides participants with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation skills in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Participants will learn how to assess the need for CPR, perform CPR and provide useful information to emergency services taking over the care of the patient.

Participants are required to possess appropriate literacy and numeracy skills to read and comprehend course materials.

People completing this unit of competency attain the skills and knowledge required to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. The skills and knowledge described here relate specifically to performing CPR and do NOT address other aspects of resuscitation, life support or first aid.

  • Minimise immediate risk to health and safety of self, casualty and others by isolating any hazard(s)
  • Approach the casualty in a calm, culturally aware, sensitive and respectful manner
  • Assess vital signs of casualty
  • Recognise the need for CPR
  • Perform CPR in line with ARC Guidelines
  • Seek assistance from others and/or ambulance support as appropriate
  • Request ambulance support or appropriate medical assistance and/or ambulance support using available means of communication
  • Accurately convey details of casualty’s condition and CPR procedures performed to emergency services/relieving personnel
  • Calmly provide information to reassure casualty, adopting a communication style to match the casualty’s level of consciousness
  • Provide reports, where applicable, in a timely manner, presenting all relevant facts relating to performing CPR according to established procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies

Participants who demonstrate competency by passing both the theory and practical assessments will receive a Statement of Attainment for HLTAID001 Provide CPR issued by Improve Group RTO #31506, which is (normally) valid for 1 year in line with ARC guidelines.

Please note that to demonstrate competency in the practical component of CPR you must be able to conduct 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor (following training package guidance). Participants unable to complete this portion of the training will receive a Certificate of Attendance for HLTAID001 Provide CPR, issued by the Improve Group RTO #31506.
