Course Overview

This course is designed to enable attendees to provide a first aid response in an education and care setting. This may apply to those who work or operate in a range of situations, including schools, kindergartens, child care centres, sporting and community settings. There is a legislative requirement for education and care providers to have a qualified first aid staff member available during school, centre or service provider hours.

This course is aimed at people in an education and care setting who wish to gain first aid skills for their school, workplace or community settings.

There are no pre-requisites or co-requisites for this competency unit. This course also incorporates the content of units:

  • HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (refer to course flyer)
  • HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid (refer to course flyer)

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance in an education and care setting. These skills and knowledge may be applied in a range of situations, including schools, kindergartens, child care centres, sporting and community settings.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be demonstrated evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, ARC guidelines and workplace procedures:

  • Located and interpreted workplace policies and procedures
  • Conducted a hazard assessment and identified strategies to minimise risk
  • Demonstrated safe manual handling techniques
  • Assessed airway, breathing and responsiveness of casualty
  • Performed at least two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant, a child and an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, demonstrating the following techniques on each:
    • Checking for response and normal breathing
    • Recognising abnormal breathing
    • Opening and clearing the airway
    • Using correct hand location, compression depth rate in line with the ARC recommended ratio of compressions and ventilations
    • Acting in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
    • Following single rescuer procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
    • Followed prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    • Conducted a verbal secondary survey
  • Applied first aid procedures for the following:
    • Allergic reactions (together with the preparation of management plans)
    • Anaphylaxis (together with the preparation of management plans)
    • Asthma
    • Basic wound care
    • Severe bleeding
    • Burns
    • Cardiac arrest
    • Choking and airway obstruction
    • Convulsions, including febrile convulsions
    • Envenomation (using pressure immobilisation)
    • Epilepsy and seizures
    • Fractures, sprains and strains (using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques)
    • Head injuries
    • Poisoning
    • Respiratory distress
    • Shock
  • Followed workplace procedures for reporting details of the incident, including:
    • Providing an accurate verbal report of the incident
    • Completing an incident, injury, trauma and illness record
  • Responded to at least three simulated first aid scenarios contextualised to the candidate’s workplace/community setting, and involving infants and children of varying ages.

Participants who demonstrate competency in both the theory and practical assessments will receive a Statement of Attainment for HLTAID004 Provide an Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting issued by Improve Group RTO #31506 that is valid for 3 years.  The CPR component is valid for 1 year. This course relates to the HLT Health Training package.

Please note that to demonstrate competency in the practical component of CPR you must be able to conduct 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor (following training package guidance). Participants unable to complete this portion of the training will receive a Certificate of Attendance HLTAID001 Provide CPR.
